Lesson Planning

Introduction
Myself, as a Japanese adult learner, have a fear of being unable to learn, how to balance study time, and how to overcome the language barrier. I asked myself what will support me the best to continue my studies. This thought helped me to choose the five lesson planning components. In general, adult learners are already motivated to some degree for their own personal reasons. However, the challenge is how to keep them motivated and excited when they encounter obstacles. This lesson planning I am exploring, will create a learning environment for busy, diverse adult learners.

1) Characteristics of Adult Learner
I’m exploring educational strategies in which students can learn “how to learn"and also learning to guide the students to discover and develop their own original learning strategy. This component focuses on understanding the students’ diversity and Characters. It will give me ideas how to coach the students to build their own individual learning methods. Howard Gardner’s “Multiple Intelligences” help me understand a variety of learning abilities and will explain the different views of diversity, not only variety of ages and different backgrounds of students but also each student’s different intelligences.

2) Creating a Positive Learning Environment
One of barriers for the adult learner is fear of being unable to learn. As an adult educator, I need to breakdown their fear of unnecessary worries and present to the classroom an unlimited possibility environment.  Acknowledgement of students’ ability will give them respect, and making connections with individuals will help gain the trust from each of the students. These foundations allow me to provide a safe atmosphere from which students can take risks and learn from their mistakes. Creating a safe environment will help students work together and solve problems by using their existing knowledge.

3) Motivational Techniques
John Keller’s ARCS model will teach me how to inspire the students’ enthusiasm of learning. Adult learners come from their busy life into the classroom and the instructors will need to gain their focus and hold their “Attention”. It will be important to make a “Relevant” connection with the material to be learned and understand it by using their existing knowledge. “Confidence” will take the place of fear and motivate students to learn more easily. A student receiving positive feedback for their effort will give them a sense of “Satisfaction” which supports adult learners to stay in the educational field.

4) Media
I chose media to engage the students’ emotion by the use of visual examples. It will help to support students who have difficulty understanding language, not only the English but also the special terms used in the field. A visual presentation, such as videos or slides will give an instant emotional impact to the students. For example, show in a video how bacteria grow on hands, dangerous of a wet floor, or the result of a knife dropped on an unsafe shoe. Moreover, visual information will help to connect students existing knowledge without dialogue.
 5) Planning
Adult Learners are generally busy people and go back to their real life after the class. We cannot assume they will follow up on their studies, so we need strong lesson planning to deliver the knowledge and make sure they have a full understanding of each session. This seven steps lesson plan, 1) Gain attentions, 2) Focus on Objective, 3) Assess their knowledge, 4) Presenting new content, 5) Provide practical feedback, 6) Assess their learning, 7) Closer, will allow me to complete each session in the allotted time without carry over, and also help preparation for the next session.
